I was part of the Battle Company QRF element to Wanat. Are you aware that we had the house in the southeast well fortified, that a local construction company came in, and using a front-loader even built a road (albeit a steep one) up the terraces to this position which would've enabled easy re-supply? That all we (B Co, 3PLT)needed was someone to come up & relieve us, and there's your COP Kahler. I mean, of course you would've needed to improve on what we did, but we thought it was the biggest waste in the world to abandon that valley without gaining something out of it. Sure, where we were wasn't right next to the bazaar, but you could've sent down daily patrols to the village to interact with the locals. The ground they chose to build on was nothing short of indefensible. I saw some pretty gruesome shit in Afghanistan, but nothing so bad nor so pointless, as what transpired in Wanat.
