Pens, paper and pencils are all items the children like. When he goes out on patrol (he is in Indian co and not in this area) he can pass these to the children. For instance, would sending coloring books and crayons be a good idea? Would sending lots of pens be a good idea? In reality, I wish I could send them PEACE, but for that...we send our Marines.
